Green Bay Packers vs Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys‘ come-from-behind win over the Lions Sunday set the stage for a showdown next weekend between historic NFC rivals: Dallas at Green Bay, with a bid in the NFC title game on the line.

This will be the seventh postseason matchup all-time, and the first since 1995. Dallas leads the postseason series 4-2, having won four straight after losing the first two. A Packers win would be their first in the postseason series since 1967.

January 14, 1996: Cowboys 38, Packers 27

The Cowboys played the Packers in the 1996 NFC Championship game while they were on their way to their most recent Super Bowl win. Dallas, the home team, was a nine-point favorite. Troy Aikman went 21/33 for 255 yards and two touchdowns. Brett Favre was 21/39 for 307 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions.

January 8, 1994: Cowboys 35, Packers 9

These teams last met in the divisional round in Jan. 1994. Dallas, again the home team, was again the favorite — this time by ten points. Aikman went 23/30 for 337 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. Favre was 18/35 for 211 yards and an interception.

January 16, 1993: Cowboys 27, Packers 23

In the 1993 divisional round, the Packers went into Dallas as 13.5-point underdogs. Aikman finished 28/37 for for 302 yards, three touchdowns and two interceptions. Favre went 28/45 for 331 for two touchdowns and two interceptions.

January 16, 1983, Cowboys 37, Packers 26

This game also took place in the divisional round, and the Packers went into Dallas as seven-point underdogs. Danny White went 23/36 for 225 yards, a touchdown and an interception for the Cowboys. Lynn Dickey was 19/36 for 332, a touchdown and three interceptions.

December 31, 1967: Packers 21, Cowboys 17

These two teams met in the Conference Championship game in 1967. Bart Starr was 14/24 for 191 yards and two interceptions. Don Meredith went 10/25 for 59 yards and one interception. After this game, the Packers went on to win their second-consecutive Super Bowl.

January 1, 1967: Packers 34, Cowboys 27

Another Conference Championship matchup, Bart Starr went 19/28 for 304 yards and three touchdowns. Don Meredith was 15/31 for 238 yards, a touchdown and an interception. From here, the Packers went on to win the first ever Super Bowl.

The Dallas Cowboys might be the biggest surprise of the 2016 NFL season, starting the season 4-1 without the injured Tony Romo. Now, the team faces its greatest test thus far when they visit the Green Bay Packers in Week 6.

Dallas has sole possession of first place in the NFC East after their most recent win against the Cincinnati Bengals. Having previously taken advantage of mostly subpar competition, the Cowboys had no problem beating the defending AFC North Champions, winning 28-14 after leading by 28 points in the fourth quarter. But even after defeating a formidable opponent, “America’s Team” still has its doubters.

The Packers, who are 3-1 after beating the New York Giants, are four-point favorites on Sunday. It’s not surprising that the Cowboys are underdogs on the road, but the betting line indicates that oddsmakers still give Green Bay an advantage over Dallas on a neutral field.

Aaron Rodgers is considered by many to be the NFL’s best quarterback. Dak Prescott has only made five starts, but the rookie has played as well as the team could have asked in Romo’s absence.

The league continues to wait for Prescott to look overmatched, but it’s looking more and more like that time will never come. The fourth-round draft pick is proving to be a first-round talent, setting a rookie record with 155 pass attempts with no interceptions. His 101.5 passer rating is good for eighth in the NFL, and he continues to get better with each game.
